A NIF (commonly referred to as Número de Identificação Fiscal in Portugal) is a unique nine-digit identifier designated for both residents and non-residents in Portugal for taxation purposes. It holds a crucial role within the Portuguese tax framework, facilitating the unique identification of each taxpayer and their associated tax responsibilities.

This number is
 essential for anyone relocating to Portugal and it is prominently featured on various tax documents, including income tax returns, corporate tax returns, income tax notices, housing tax, and property tax.

What's required?

To request your NIF, you will need the following documents:

1. PROOF OF ID (International Passport or EU ID card)

2. PROOF OF ADDRESS OUTSIDE PORTUGAL (bank statement or utility bill issued within the past 3 months showing your name and full residential address)

What's the process like?

Once you place your order we'll email you a brief form and instructions on how to upload copies of the requried documents.

As soon as we get the required documents, we'll review them and if everything is ok, a local lawyer will become your fiscal representative in Portugal request your NIF on your behalf. 
Then, we'll request your Tax Office Portal password and email it to you when received.

How long does it take?

You should expect to receive your NIF (PDF version by email) within 7 business days after you submit the required information.

As for your Tax Office password, we'll request it within 24h after receiving your NIF. Typically, it takes 3-4 weeks for the password to arrive since it's sent by mail. We will email it to you as soon as we have it.
