Portuguese Citizenship for Sephardic Jews

Portugal offers citizenship to descendants of Sephardic Jews who were expelled from Portugal in the 15th century, though requirements have changed significantly in recent years.

Eligibility Requirements (2025)

You may qualify for Portuguese citizenship through Sephardic Jewish ancestry if you can prove:

  • Sephardic Jewish ancestry with connection to Portugal
  • Certification from a recognized Jewish community
  • Legal residence in Portugal for at least 3 years (consecutive or non-consecutive)
  • Knowledge of Portuguese language
  • Clean criminal record

Historical Background

This pathway was established to rectify the historical injustice of the expulsion and forced conversion of Sephardic Jews during the Inquisition period. Initially introduced in 2015, the requirements were modified in 2022 and again in 2024.

Documentation Required

  • Certificate from the Portuguese Jewish Community (Lisbon or Porto) confirming Sephardic origins
  • Proof of connection to Portugal through family names, language, genealogy, or family memory
  • Evidence of residence in Portugal for at least 3 years
  • Portuguese language proficiency certificate
  • Criminal record certificates
  • Application form

Transitional Provisions

For applications submitted before the 2024 law change, alternative criteria may apply, including:

  • Inheritance of real estate rights in Portugal
  • Regular visits to Portugal demonstrating an effective connection
  • Holding a residence permit for more than one year
  • Professional or scientific activities connected to Portugal

Application Process

  1. Obtain certification from a Portuguese Jewish community
  2. Establish legal residence in Portugal
  3. Complete the 3-year residence requirement
  4. Gather all required documentation
  5. Submit your application
  6. Pay the application fee
  7. Wait for processing (typically 24-36 months)
  8. Receive your citizenship certificate

Important Considerations

  • The requirements have become more stringent since 2022
  • The application processing can take 2-3 years
  • Certification from the Jewish communities may involve additional fees and requirements
  • Unlike other pathways, this one specifically requires residence in Portugal
