Professionals: a work contract, a work visa
A player, coach, trainer or sports physiotherapist hired by a club or a federation is an employee. The route is the residence visa for subordinate professional activity — the D1 — with the sports employment contract (contrato de trabalho desportivo) or a promise of contract as the core document, and, where the profession is regulated (coaches need the Portuguese coaching title or its recognition through IPDJ), the competent body’s declaration. Decision within 60 days; then a residence permit under art. 88.º, valid two years, renewable.
Clubs experienced in international transfers usually prepare the file; those that are not tend to forget the recognition of coaching qualifications and the housing proof, which is why a January transfer can miss the registration window.
Amateurs: the temporary-stay visa for sport
For a stay under a year in an amateur capacity — a season with a club, a training camp, a youth academy — the consulate issues a temporary-stay visa on:
- a document from the federation confirming the sporting activity;
- a termo de responsabilidade from the club or association taking responsibility for accommodation and for any healthcare and repatriation costs.
Means of subsistence are reduced to 50 % of the net minimum wage for the months of the stay, and can be lower still when the club’s guarantee also covers meals. Alternatively, a Portuguese citizen or legal resident can act as guarantor with a notarised declaration, their tax return and three months of bank statements.
- Professionals: work residence visa on the club contract, 60-day decision
- Amateurs: temporary-stay visa, 30-day decision, federation document + club guarantee
- 50 % of the minimum wage as means for amateurs (460 € a month in 2026)
- 110 € consular fee in both cases
Common documents
Form, passport valid three months beyond the stay, two photos, proof of legal status if applying outside your country, travel insurance (medical and repatriation), criminal record certificate apostilled or legalised (not for under-16s), and — for temporary stays — a return ticket. Minors travelling without both parents add a notarised travel authorisation; academies hosting minors must add proof of schooling arrangements.
Questions
A club wants to sign a 17-year-old from abroad. Is it possible?
Immigration law allows it with the parents' authorisation and a hosting arrangement; the sports federation's international transfer rules (FIFA's protection of minors, for football) are the tighter constraint and must be cleared first.
Can an amateur visa be turned into a professional contract?
A temporary-stay visa does not convert into a residence permit in Portugal. With a signed professional contract the athlete applies for the residence visa at the consulate; the club's timetable should allow for the 60-day decision.
Do coaches need Portuguese qualifications?
Coaching is a regulated activity in Portugal (title of treinador de desporto). Foreign qualifications are recognised through the IPDJ; the recognition should be obtained before the contract is signed.
