Business “NIF”: NIPC: Guide for Companies
Understanding NIPC
The NIPC (Número de Identificação de Pessoa Colectiva) serves as the corporate tax identification number for legal entities in Portugal. Unlike personal NIFs for individuals, NIPC identifies companies and organizations. This number also functions as a VAT number when prefixed with “PT”, appearing as PT followed by 9 digits, such as PT500123456.
Who Needs NIPC
Limited companies operating under Portuguese law, whether Lda or SA structures, must have a NIPC. Foreign companies establishing branches in Portugal require one for legal operation. Associations, foundations, and partnerships with legal personality all need NIPCs. Essentially, any registered business entity conducting operations in Portugal must obtain this corporate identifier.
It’s important to note that freelancers and sole traders operating under their own names use their personal NIF for business activities. Only when establishing a separate legal entity does a NIPC become necessary.
